Hi! I’m the Starlit Scientist–nice to meet you!
A little bit about me and this blog: I’ve had social anxiety for as long as I can remember, but I haven’t let it stop me from achieving my goals. As a graduate student at one of the best universities in the country, I hope I can show you that having social anxiety doesn’t have to stop you from reaching for the stars. Hence the name: The Starlit Scientist.
That being said, in this blog, I will also be honest and blunt. Social anxiety does make a lot of things harder. I would never deny that. It has caused countless problems for my life so far, and I imagine that that won’t ever really go away.
But there are things that make it easier.
One of them was realizing that social anxiety exists, and that plenty of other people have it. That’s why I started this blog. It took so long for me to realize that this is a problem that affects many people, and I think a big part of the reason is that, by definition, people with social anxiety don’t really talk about it. This, coupled with the fact that social anxiety is often simply dismissed as ‘shyness’, makes it hard to learn that it’s a real thing and a real issue. In this blog, I am sharing stories about living with social anxiety in the hopes that others realize that they’re not alone in their struggles, that it’s okay to reach out for help, and that it doesn’t have to prevent people from reaching their life goals.
